Producers

Companies

Profiles of the producers that anchor U.S. coal output. Two of the three legacy names on this page now live under one roof.

BTU
Peabody Energy
St. Louis-based. The biggest private-sector coal producer in the country, with major Powder River Basin operations and seaborne exposure.
Legacy
Arch Resources
Premium metallurgical assets — Leer and Leer South — now operating inside Core Natural Resources after the January 2025 merger.
Legacy
CONSOL Energy
Operator of the Pennsylvania Mining Complex and a Baltimore export terminal, now the other half of Core Natural Resources.

Why the consolidation happened

Running a coal company in a shrinking domestic thermal market rewards two things: low cost per ton and access to export docks. Merging Arch's metallurgical portfolio with CONSOL's high-calorific thermal complex and terminal ownership gave the combined company both. Expect the pattern to continue — the producers left standing will be the ones that can ship overseas cheaply.
